Our history

1974

Maxi was established in the midst of the energy and sugar crisis. The company rapidly conquered the market, becoming the biggest private importer of sugar in Italy, with supplies originating from various European countries. During the same period, Maxi entered the retail sector with 1 kg packs and opened the packaging centre in Albizzate (VA) for Union Zuccheri brand products.

1977

Service and product quality became a hallmark, when Maxi was the first company in the sector to obtain ISO 9001 quality certification.

1985

Maxi becomes the largest sugar importer in Italy.

2006

Maxi forged a joint venture with the leading European sugar group Südzucker AG, successfully tackling the challenges associated with reforms to the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy.

2007

Maxi stepped up its presence on the Italian market by expanding the product range with sugar from developing countries.

2010

As sugar market reforms were rolled out across the European Union, Maxi affirmed its position as a
strategic and reliable partner of Südzucker AG. Thanks to targeted strategies, resilience and determination, Maxi expanded its market share in Italy to 34%, successfully navigating the complexities of the market.

2017

Maxi continued its path of market consolidation, strengthening the organisation and re-affirming its leading role in the Italian sugar sector.

2020

During the global COVID-19 crisis, Maxi demonstrated its great adaptability. By introducing innovative solutions for the supply chain, stepping up its digital presence and focusing closer on customer needs, Maxi succeeded in maintaining stability and defending its market share
despite global disruptions.

2024

Maxi proudly celebrated 50 years of history—half a century of growth, expertise and reliability. A milestone that marked not just how far the company had come, but it strength and its forward-looking approach, firmly focused on innovating, anticipating market needs and expanding its role in the Italian and European sugar sector.

Saint Louis Sucre

Saint Louis Sucre is a historic French company specialised in the production and sale of sugar. Founded in 1831, today it is part of Germany’s Südzucker Group. The company offers a wide range of sugar beet and cane sugar products for domestic consumption, industry and the catering sector.

Saint Louis Sucre combines the strength and expertise of a large global group with the flexibility and attention typical of a human-scale enterprise, operating with respect for the environment and the local area of which it is a part.

Tirlemontoise Refinery

Founded in 1836 in Tienen, Raffinerie Tirlemontoise is today one of Belgium’s biggest sugar companies. Part of the German group Südzucker, it operates under the Tiense Suiker brand. It combines a solid craft tradition with constant technological innovation, adopting a production model that uses the entire sugar beet, creating value from all by-products.

Thanks to the use of advanced technologies, Raffinerie Tirlemontoise works to minimise its water consumption and CO₂ emissions, promoting sustainable, efficient and responsible production, fully respecting the environment and the local area.

Agrana

Agrana is an Austrian company with international reach, a leader in the processing of agricultural raw materials. The Group has over 9,000 employees and more than 50 production sites in 24 countries, operating on a global scale with a strong European presence.

Agrana operates in the Sugar, Starch and Fruit sectors, serving both the retail sector, with brands such as Wiener Zucker, and the food industry. The company stands out for its focus on quality, innovation and sustainability, guaranteeing full product traceability, the development of organic products and the absence of GMOs, respecting the environment and consumer needs.
